Wednesday is ‘Stump Day’ and that is certainly the case for us today as Warren Lee Contracting arrives on site to remove some neglected stumps, two dangerous trees among others and to also significantly add to our clean up pile. The workday began with the the arrival of the crew; Warren, Bob, Reg & Tom at 7:00am…
Ease into the day with a little limbing…
The plan was to clean up some neglected areas. One area in particular we referred to as Tanglewood…
Residing within Tanglewood was a gnarly old cherry tree which performed superbly well as a host for Spotted Wing Drosophila, a nasty pest and one which farmersdotter and I prefer to nip in the pupae…
The King of Tanglewood was a magnificent Chinese Elm cleverly camouflaged as a shade tree but in reality was merely a giant weed prone to disease and fracture…
The King’s proximity to the roof of the drying shed and our neighbours fence line made it the perfect candidate for Warren to play around with Tom’s picker truck. I say play around because the crew really did make the task appear if not easy, certainly fun…
Especially when the mighty King left the room…
…clearing a way for the site of our future lavender & perennial herb garden.

Thanks for the great photos Morris. What a huge undertaking. I am about to do the same with the old curly willow in our back yard. It used to be truely gorgeous. Best shade tree and the kids and cats love to climb it. It’s already enjoyed one sure reincarnation after the hurricane wind storm here years ago. It was blown over onto power lines just before that Christmas. We were without power for 4 days. So great that we have a fire place. Almost had to bail to my brothers house in Kits – but the Hydro truck showed up as we were packing our suitcases… Anyway, the tree was cut right back to the stump. We left it that way as a play thing for our son and his pals. Then, the next year the tree came right back and grew beautifully; even larger than before. But now it looks sick and tired. Maybe it’s just craving another reincarnation?
